23 AND FEELING FREE

A quiet rainy morning for a quiet girl to turn twenty-three. I have the day off all to myself until the bf takes us out for dinner in a few hours.
I put some frozen croissants out to rise last night and this morning treated myself to a very affordable sweet and salty and buttery feast. I'm on my third cup of coffee. Thanks Mom for the raspberry jam. I'm listening to all of my ten Bruce Springsteen albums in chronological order. Contemplating curling my hair for tonight, simmering chicken bones on the stove for soup later this week. Here we go 23, it's going to be a big one I think, so we better get started.

A VERY SPECIAL DAY

The delightful Miss Mary M. Hudson turns 23 today. Happy Birthday my sweet Myrtle Sasa, you are truly scrumptious indeed.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

I have design on the brain. Design and everything that goes along with it. I recently finished a 104-week calendar to organize my life and clothing line over the next two years. Totally liberating, I'm so used to running around like a chicken with my head cut off and I can't wait to see if what I've dubbed THE SYSTEM makes my life a little simpler, or, you know, livable.

Came across this via Fashion Incubator, a new favorite quote from Verbal Croquis:

This post is for those who think fashion is glamorous. This post is for those who are thinking they may want to pursue fashion as a career choice…You think designing is easy and fun? Honey, designing is only 1/10 of a designer’s job, if you’re lucky. Ordering samples, picking swatches, making samples, overseeing fittings, schmoozing over the phone, meeting with vendors, research research research, trying to get everything to cost out to your pricepoint, edit edit edit, hyperventilate, hyperventilate, hyperventilate, lather rinse repeat but make it snappy-I want it all done yesterday. Don’t get me wrong-I love all that stuff. And I love love love my job. There’s nothing else that I want to do.

My point is that’s HARD WORK. If you’re lazy, don’t get into fashion. If you imagine yourself with your sketch pad all day, get over yourself and find yourself a sugar daddy. If you’re stupid, you will get screwed over many many times, by your vendors, by your contractors, by your very own employees, employers and coworkers.

Ain't it the truth? I learnt the hard way, blindly, fumblingly and STILL feel like I know nothing at all.

SOMETHING QUITE SPECIAL

Photobucket

Since Mary and I started this blog a few months ago I've wanted to do a series of posts on a subject of great interest to me, sparked in part by this article, that is, the ascending stars of contemporary Canadian fashion. I've felt for awhile that there is something quite special happening amongst a set of designers who, in one way or another, have ties to this country. Not that a talented Canadian is unique, certainly, but a whole whack of them taking the fashion world by storm is, in my opinion, special. What particularly excites me about these designers is that they are making garments appealing to a truly progressive fashion client and seem to be doing so with great subtlety and ease.

That they are primarily expats working abroad says something about the possibility of success or fame for those who remain in the country - not especially encouraging for someone like myself just starting on a new line. Still, inspiring, cause for pride and certainly worthy of highlighting.

Before I ever began on my own series of posts about these designers, however, I found Laura Minquini's amazing blog, The Canadian School (from which the above chart is taken), which focuses on select rising Canadian talents including most of the big guns, Rad Hourani, Calla Haynes, Mark Fast, etc. To her list I'd love to add some who I consider up-and-comers, Clayton Evans, Jennifer Ann Gilpen, Heather Martin, Travis Taddeo, Audrey Cantwell, Maryanne Mathias.... I could go on.

Anyway, a deserving subject, and a great new blog to add to my favorites.

ZUCCHINI IN JANUARY

Photobucket

Good morning! ..er well almost. I'm sorry for the lazy-day posting, but I was terribly busy this morning sleeping in and exercising and eating these amazing muffins. How about I just give you the recipe and then you can make them too, sound good?
These muffins are great and hearty (but not overly healthy) and are a quick way to use up shredded zucchini you may have in your freezer.

Pistachio Zucchini and Carrot Muffins:
(adapted from my mother's Zucchini Muffin recipe)

3 eggs
3/4 cup applesauce
1/4 cup canola/vegetable oil
1/4 cup light or golden honey
3/4 - 1 cup granulated sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
2 cups shredded zucchini*
1 cup shredded carrot

2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup unbleached, all-purpose flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cardamom
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup chocolate chips (optional)
1/2 cup finely chopped pistachios, plus extra to sprinkle on tops
1 & 1/2 cups roughly chopped walnuts
1 tsp salt (if using pre-salted pistachios, only add a pinch of salt)

*since my zucchini was frozen and then defrosted I was able to remove much of the excess liquid. If yours is still quite moist, you may want to use up to 1 & 1/2 cups sugar, but add no honey.

Sift together flours, baking soda and powder, spices, and salt. Stir in oats, chocolate chips, and nuts. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, oil, applesauce, sugar, and honey. Add vanilla and stir in zucchini and carrots. Add the dry ingredients to the zucchini mixture and fold together until just mixed. Distribute into pre-greased muffin tins and top with a pinch of chopped pistachios. Bake at 350°F for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Makes 24 muffins.

RB and I went to the Empress this weekend where my insistence that Hot Bob make me a Shirley Temple shooter (??) resulted in the (somewhat slow) realization that calling it a night was an excellent idea. I wore my new sequined t-shirt and red lipstick and was entertained with conversations on food, pornography and shapeshifters. Saturday saw the epic sammie quest of 2010 in which we traveled to not just one, but both Italian Centre groceries in search of the perfect spicy panini. Sunday was breakfast at the Duchess Bakeshop and a trip to the Super Flea Market where I found a present for a friend. We stopped by T&T on the northside for dim sum and wasabi chips and later watched The Thing (which was fabulous, ps.) I like weekends.

A MOMENT PLEASE

Photobucket

This is what is outside my window right now. The rain is pouring and the wind is gusting. Flooding is happening all over BC. The power is out, water is contaminated.
Still, a day like today helps me keep it all in perspective. I'm sitting in warmth, with the lights on and a sleeping cat clinging to me. I'll go eat lunch soon and walk over to work for an afternoon shift. I'll come home and maybe go watch a movie with the bf tonight. Even those unfortunate people and families in BC who have been dealing with the true force of this downpour will be back to work next week, drinking city water, airing out carpets, and cleaning off driveways.

The decisions you make are your own, but please don't ignore tragedy. Yéle Haiti is a foundation created to help build awareness about Haiti and "transform the country through programs in education, sports, the arts and environment". Currently the foundation is focusing all efforts on relief during this natural disaster. This foundation has helped Haiti before, it is helping Haiti now and it will continue helping long after the western world has forgotten. Your money is going directly to Haiti relief. The founder himself, Wyclef Jean, is right now moving rubble, removing bodies, talking, listening, and aiding. Go to the website, donating is easy. Or to Doctors Without Borders, or the Canadian Red Cross. The world is talking about this because it is important and financial aid is needed. That's all I will say.

TWO MONTH BAG?

Photobucket

Hey Mary, How about one of these Fjällräven backpacks? They come in a million colours, cost only $80 and you can buy them online from ooga booga in LA. And hey, everyone will think you're Swedish. Fun!

THE TWO MONTH BAG

I officially have a trip in my future -- but I'll divulge more on that later -- what matters now is that I find the perfect large, fashionable, impenetrable-to-thieves day bag. I've been leaning towards these classic and duffel bag styles:

{Clockwise from top left: Krane laptop bag, Fred Perry waxed canvas day bag, Rag & Bone weekender wax cotton bag, Swaine Adeney Brigg's Mayfair Collection sports holdall, Krane hawker duffel bag. All bags, except Swaine Adeney are available from Gravity Pope.}

RECENT ACQUISITIONS: PART A

Photobucket

With Christmas and my birthday last month, and wardrobe boredom setting in this month, I've managed to acquire a number of new items that are either amazing in their own right or show promise for the future.

In the latter category is this dress I picked up at Value Village last week. It's way too big and 100% polyester (clings to e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g) but the attached metal mesh handkerchief alone was worth the purchase.

Photobucket

So what to do now? Leave it as is? Cut it short? Take the mesh off and turn it into a necklace that could be worn with anything? Tough call, I'd love suggestions.

BSC FRIDAY NIGHT

Photobucket

Crashed a party at Baby Seal Club last night. Well, technically it wasn't crashing cause there was a show and I paid to get in like everyone else. Felt like party crashing though, I'm getting old. I think maybe Genevieve and I are bad influences on each other.

BACK TO LIFE

Thank god Mary has been posting lately because I've been in a serious blog-funk. December is always so overwhelming, I need a break when it's done. I also managed to spill a cup of earl grey onto my keyboard which, yeah, never works out so well. I've been operating without a spacebar for the past week.

Anyway, new year, new keyboard, time now to start a new career and begin this new life of mine. Sounds easy, right?

I'm still deeply in the "trying to find meaning and inspiration" phase and will be for awhile, which is both over and underwhelming. Something to look forward to though: RB and I just booked flights to San Francisco in May which is very exciting.

If you're looking for a little inspiration yourself perhaps check out the fourth edition of 01 Magazine to which my friend Bree contributed drawings. I also love their fashion features, some examples: an interview with (and lookbook images by) Heather Martin from MONO. No secret that I'm a great fan and, gee, how well can I relate to this quote right now:

How did the name Mono come about?

Coming up with a word to describe what you do is a challenging task, I wanted to express the minimalist nature of the work yet also characterize the individuality of my client all in one word. I rather enjoy the formalism of the word too, the way the letters interact with one another.

also a (very relatable) fashion editorial entitled 'Canadians'.

RED FLOWERS EVERYWHERE

Photobucket

I am so very in love with all things Red Flower. Thanks to Rosalind over at Eden Lilly I have a whole selection of amazing products from this naturally minded company. I really favour everything in the Hammam line and I have started to save my pennies for a bottle of the organic guaiac perfume. Suddenly a bath seems like a very sensible way for me to start my day today.

NEVER TOO LATE

These were the lovely gingerbread that I made back in December. Just uploaded the photos now, but considering how I still have a half a tin of these boys and girls in my freezer, I don't think it's too late to show them off. Come on over if you'd like to share them with me -- I saw the grocery store still has eggnog too.

NEW YEAR, BIG DREAMS

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. I had a great (last minute) trip home to visit all my family and friends in Edmonton. After spending a week in the freezing cold that comes with the territory of winter on the prairies, I think I am more ready than ever for spring. Unfortunately it's still grey skies here in Vancouver, so for now I will just have to enjoy the Dace Spring 2010 preview:

And fantasize about spending the summer in Europe, where I would get good use out of these Fall 2009 outfits, which are conveniently now on sale:
