IN THE KASBAH, OR, WHO KNEW FLOWERS GREW ON CACTI?

Photobucket

Our second day in Chefchaouen Mary and I spent the morning wandering around the Kasbah in the centre of town. It provided a quiet respite from the madness of the medina and was the first of many gardens we enjoyed on this trip. We loved having a chance to privately reflect in these lush surroundings on things we'd seen and done so far.

The Chefchaouen Kasbah dates to the early 18th century and consists of simple, striking buildings surrounding a mess of succulents, palm trees, flowers and cats happily sunning themselves amongst the greenery. The buildings house a small ethnographic museum, including a weaving studio and a less-than-comfortable looking prison. From the top of the Kasbah tower we had amazing views over the town and the mountains beyond. A lovely morning.
